The Agency of Selection.
The agency of the future, reconsidered.
An agency used to sell scarce making. AI has made making abundant. So the agency of the future sells the one thing that is still scarce: getting a brand chosen, by people and by the AI they now ask first. This is not a course bolted onto software. It’s a claim about what an agency is for, and everything here follows from it.
Free and open. No email gate.
What changed.
Four things, all at once. Each one moves value away from making and towards being chosen.
A first draft of a page, a post, an ad or a deck now costs minutes. An agency that sells output is selling something its client can nearly get for free.
Buyers ask an AI assistant who to call before they search, scroll or ask a friend. It names two or three brands and gives reasons. A brand that isn’t named never gets to compete.
AI picks the brand it can tell apart and believe. Brands that look and sound like everyone else drop out of the answer, however much they publish.
For the first time you can ask the questions buyers ask and read who gets named, believed and preferred. Clients always paid to be chosen. Now you can show whether they were.
Anyone can run software.
That’s exactly why the agency matters more now, not less. AI floods every market with competent, average, interchangeable work. In a sea of sameness the brands that get chosen are the different and distinctive ones, and that has always been the agency’s craft.
Finding the true, ownable reason a brand should be chosen is the hardest and most valuable thing in marketing. AI can read the market. It can’t decide what a brand should stand for, or have the nerve to commit to it.
Novel, surprising, culturally sharp ideas are still where AI is weakest. It’s built to produce the likely next thing, and a great idea is the unlikely one.
AI is getting good at roll-out: the hundredth resize, variant or page. Getting the first design right, the system everything comes from, still takes a lot of skilled hand-holding.
People choose brands they can tell a story about. Finding that story, and telling it so a buyer repeats it, is a human act. AI can retell a story well. Someone has to find it first.
For years these crafts were squeezed between status meetings, resizes, reports and chasing approvals. The Agency of Selection gives the legwork to AI and the time back to the work that makes the difference. AI is the lever. The craft is the point.
What an agency is for now.
An Agency of Selection is accountable for one outcome: its clients get chosen more often, at the moments that make them money. It does four things, every quarter.
Where the brand is lost, moment by moment, across the seven rungs from Known to Kept.
The reason the brand is worth choosing, made unmistakable with an idea, a design and a story.
Wherever it lives: the site, the listings, the proof, the offer, the follow-up.
With a re-read, and do it again next quarter.
Everything in the section.
Start where you are.
Change the model before you change the tools.
Learn the method, then run it on one client.
Know which job each piece does, and where your craft goes.
Three tests for everything here.
If a page fails one, it isn’t in this section.
